The Lowdown on NOAC

Scouting is so much more than a love for the outdoors, it's about friendship, tradition, and service! At BSA, we're all about community, and we work tirelessly to connect Scouts from all over the country who share the same values that have helped shape generations of young people into leaders and citizens of character. Whether through our local troops, national events like JOTI-JOTA, or the National Jamboree, we strive to create a supportive network where Scouts can learn, grow, and make a difference together.

Perhaps no other event defines Scouting like NOAC: The National Order of the Arrow Conference. But what exactly is NOAC? If you’re unfamiliar with the event, no worries—we’re here to put you in the loop on one of the biggest Scouting events of the year!

What is NOAC?

NOAC, or The National Order of the Arrow Conference, brings Scouts from every corner of the United States under one roof, usually a major university campus. With as many as 8,000 Arrowmen in attendance, NOAC is a mosaic of diversity, friendship, and adventure. It's a biennial celebration that resonates deeply within the Scouting community, second only to the legendary BSA National Jamboree.

How did NOAC Get Started?

Let's rewind a bit and dive into the rich history that has shaped NOAC into the monumental event it is today.

The seeds of NOAC were planted in 1915 when Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson founded the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's national honor society. However, it wasn't until 1948 that the inaugural NOAC was held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Since then, NOAC has evolved into a beacon of Scouting excellence, a tradition cherished by generations of Arrowmen.

One of the most remarkable NOACs took place in 2015, as over 15,000 Arrowmen descended upon the gathering to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. It was a jubilant celebration of a century of service, brotherhood, and leadership, a testament to the enduring legacy of Scouting.

What Makes NOAC a Big Event in the Scouting Calendar?

First and foremost, NOAC is a crucible of unity. It's a chance for Arrowmen to forge lifelong friendships, bond over shared experiences, and revel in the camaraderie that defines the spirit of Scouting. Whether participating in exhilarating activities, engaging in meaningful discussions, or simply swapping patches, NOAC fosters a sense of belonging that transcends geographic boundaries.

Think of NOAC as a laboratory of leadership. Through a myriad of workshops, seminars, and training sessions, Arrowmen have the opportunity to hone their leadership skills, empowering them to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond. From service projects to leadership development, NOAC equips Scouts with the tools they need to become agents of change in a rapidly evolving world.

But perhaps most importantly, NOAC is a celebration of service. At its core, the Order of the Arrow is dedicated to cheerful service, a principle that permeates every aspect of NOAC. Whether through service projects benefiting the host community or through acts of kindness and generosity among Arrowmen, NOAC embodies the spirit of giving back and making a difference in the world.
