23 Unique and Awesome Pocket Knife Functions

#23 Magnifying glass - A logical addition to a pocket knife for an adventurer who needs one extra tool to start a campfire, or one who accidentally left their glasses at home.

#22 Flashlights- Another logical addition to a scout’s pocket knife. This function could come in handy at night, in dark places, and to look for lost things under your bed.

#21 A compass: An excellent function for any scout in the wilderness trying to find their campsite, or completing an adventure to get that coveted Orienteering Merit badge.

#20 Forks and Spoons: These are helpful functions especially at a campsite when you’re trying to leave no trace. It also prevents you from having to bring extra cutlery.

#19 Ballpoint Pens - A convenient addition to a pocket knife for a person who habitually  forgets their pen. Like me.

#18 Laser pointer: This is a useful function especially if you have a cat. It can also be used for stargazing; Astronomy Merit Badge, anyone?

#17 USB- Have you ever been in a bind and needed a USB drive on the go? Problem Solved! Perfect for students, business people, and James Bond, pocket knives with 16GB USB Drives are on the market and readily available for purchase whether you need to snag your powerpoint presentation on biodiversity in the Galapagos Islands or a top secret government file. It’s easy access and disguisability make it the perfect companion to keep you prepared.

#16 Glow in the Dark Outer Casing- this oddity helps you to never lose your pocketknife at night… just as long as you’ve kept it in direct light for a certain period of time, it can glow for either minutes or hours in the pitch black. This is called phosphorescence.

#15 Ruler- That’s right- some pocket knives come equipped with rulers. Though they won’t give you the full twelve inches that standard rulers have, but they can help you measure the small things when it counts.

#14 Wrenches- I’ve seen pocket knives come outfitted with wrenches of nearly every size- even allen wrenches. The only thing we haven’t seen is a monkey wrench!

#13 Nail Clippers: It may seem odd to put a set of nail clippers in a pocket knife but as far as utility is concerned, this is a great function to have for when you break a nail, need to perform an activity that requires short nails to do, or when you need to trim yours to prevent injuring any more co-workers with your pterodactyl claws (sorry, Mark).

#12 Fish Scaler: A specific function that is sure to help any scout with a freshly caught fish in need of scaling. Be sure to look into our filleting knife if you want to avoid accidentally consuming a pesky fishbone.

#11 Drill bits: Save some money on your next project by grabbing a pocket knife with drill bits of varying sizes already included!

#10 Magnetized recessed drill bit holder: Perfect for taking a construction gig on the road, some pocket knives have magnetized holders that allow you to carry your drill bits in an easily accessible way to save you the trouble of looking for the bit you need to get the job done.

#9 Cuticle Pusher: This is a bit more odd than the nail clipper function we mentioned unless you are the type to be overzealous about nail health. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that by the way. In my experience, cuticle pushers are difficult to keep track of but since this one's self-contained in a pocket knife, problem solved!

#8 A Damasteel Blade- a little splash of Swedish ingenuity can give your pocket knife a corrosion resistant edge above the others with Damasteel’s trademark blade design.

#7 Orange Peeler: This is an oddly specific function that can cut through the rind of an orange which is perfect for lunchtime if you packed yourself a fruit with a thick rind as a snack.

#6 Telescopic Pointer: This function is perfect for students and businessmen giving presentations. It’s a bit old fashioned as most of us would just use a laser pointer (see #12)

#5 A tire tread gauge: An extremely useful yet oddly specific function that can measure the treads on your car or truck tires so that you can determine when they need to be replaced.

#4 A miniature hammer: It feels like a novelty function more than anything, but no less convenient- especially if you don’t want to carry around a heavy hammer in your pack.

#3 A miniature ax: Like the hammer, this feels like even more of a novelty function- especially when there are pocket knives with actual wood saws.

#2 Cigar Cutter- If you fancy a dapper smoke once in a blue moon, the right pocket knife can give you the clipper you need to snip the tip of a cigar and light it up like a Fall Out Boy song. Just wait until you’re in your thirties. Or become the head of the Italian Mafia.

#1 Tiffany’s Sterling Silver Swiss Army Knife: This is Victorinox’s way of commemorating 180 years since the Tiffany brand’s establishment in 1837. It’s fairly atypical for a pocket knife to be made with a sterling silver outer casing as it tarnishes easily. For this reason, it probably should be considered more of a show piece, but all of the functions are made with Victorinox’s stainless steel, so it’s just as useful as all of their other pocket knives. You can also get your initials monogrammed into it for an extra cost.
