In 1884, a Swiss national named Karl Elsener opened a cutler’s workshop called Victorinox in Ibach- a small town located in the Swiss canton of Schwyz which is situated near the Mouta River. During this time, Switzerland was one of the poorer countries in Europe, so Elsner worked to combat poverty and unemployment in this region by creating jobs as a business owner. It was in 1891 that Elsner supplied the soldier’s knife to the Swiss Army for the first time. His design was born of a desire to create compact knives with an array of practical functions that could be an all-in-one solution for soldiers living on the front lines. The knife was to be used for opening canned food and for assembling and disassembling the Swiss service rifle, the Schmidt–Rubin, which required a screwdriver for both.
