Scout Chef Kitchen Presents: Homemade Trail Mix Four Ways

If there is one snack that is just MADE for the out-of-doors, it is trail mix. The best part about it (in my humble opinion) is that it can be customized to basically anyone’s taste, eating preference, and mood! Trail mix and granola mixtures are one of those snacks that can be made accessible to anyone. Check out some of our Scout Chef Kitchen trail mix creations and maybe even whip one up for your Scouts - if you don’t like one ingredient, omit it or swap it out for something you do love!

Classic Trail Mix

This classic recipe is perfect for on-the-go snacking and will satisfy all the cravings – salty, sweet, and savory. Just combine everything together and that.is.it!

4 cups Chex cereal

1 ½ cups pretzels

1 cup M&M’s

1 ½ cups roasted and salted Cashews

1 ½ cups walnuts

1 cup roasted and salted Peanuts

1 ½ cup raisins

1 cup dried banana chips

Trail Mix Bites

1 cup old fashioned oats

¼ cup raisins

¼ cup chopped nuts (peanuts, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, etc)

¼ cup mini chocolate chips

¾ cup peanut butter (or Sunbutter)

3 tablespoons honey

Combine the peanut butter and honey thoroughly. Combine the dry ingredients separately. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the peanut butter mixture. Roll into balls and then lay out on a baking sheet in the refrigerator. They can be stored in the fridge or a cooler until ready to eat. If you are taking on a hike, pack into a hard container so they don’t get smushed and throw into your pack!

Salty, Not Sweet Trail Mix

Again, super simple! Just throw in a bowl together and hit the road.

4 cups Chex cereal (rice or corn for gluten free)

4 cups pretzels (there are gluten free options available if that is for you!)

1 cup roasted and salted peanuts

1 cup shelled pistachios

1 cup walnuts

2 cup Goldfish (or a gluten free cheddar cracker)

Get Fancy

Make this classic Chex recipe from scratch and you will never be able to snack the same way again.

4.5 cups rice Chex cereal

4.5 cups corn Chex cereal

1 cup mixed nuts

1 cup pretzels

1 cup bagel chips (skip for gluten free)

6 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 ½ teaspoons salt (or seasoned salt)

¾ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

Combine all dry ingredients. Melt the butter and add seasonings (Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder). Pour the wet over the dry and heat over low heat, stirring gently and constantly for 5 - 10 minutes.

Spread the mixture over paper towels (or if you are paper-towel free, over clean kitchen towels) to dry, and then pack it up for your next adventure!

I love the classic recipe!!! What are some alternatives for to M&Ms if my kids don't love chocolate?

Hi Krissy! You could replace classic M&M's with either peanut M&M's or peanut butter M&M's - that would give it that sweet kick. You could also double the raisins!

I love the Get Fancy recipe. I watched the video on Facebook and came to grab the recipe. I love trail mix, my Mom would have it as our go to snack growing up. When the holiday comes can you do some festive trail mixes? I would love to share it with my grandkids. Love the new videos.

Thank you for sharing. Will definitely try. I have been using 4 in 1 Trail Mix from True Elements - a clean label food brand 4 in 1 Trail Mix after my gym workout for breakfast and I find it very tasty and healthy. Thank you.
