How to Get Started with Geocaching
The perfect addition to your family camping activities list!
Looking for a new activity that spans across lots of ages and abilities? THAT’S where Geocaching comes in – it’s fun with a purpose! Back in the day you would use a GPS device to get in on the action, and you still can do that (ha, remember going into Radio Shack to buy that sort of thing?), but now there’s an app for that.
Why Should I Geocache?
Geocaching is a great way to get kids excited to get outside. Whether you are heading out camping with Cub Scouts and need something to do with them or you are looking for a hobby to get into with your older Scouts, the fun and revamped scavenger hunt game is an ideal family activity. It gives you the opportunity to explore your community (or a place you might be visiting, because there are caches everywhere!), and it can even contribute to neighborhood clean-ups!
Bonus: it can also have some major health benefits. From reducing stress and boosting activity levels to giving your brain the chance to solve a “problem”, geocaching is a really awesome way to stay healthy.
Where Can I Do It?
You can go geocaching virtually anywhere (but of course, you still need to follow all local laws and land management policies). There are millions of active geocaches hidden around the world, making it simple to get started.
How Do I Get Started?
- Download the Geocaching app (many GPS devices also have geocaching features if you are going that route)
- Create an account (you can either have a free account or a paid account which gives you access to additional geocaches)
- Open the app and check out the map to find a geocache near you… head out on a hunt!
- Once you find your geocache, be sure to sign the logbook and if you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or higher value behind
Once you get really advanced, you can even create and hide your own geocache!
What Do I Need?
You don’t really need much, but here are a couple items to take along on your geocaching journeys:
- Six Essentials: first aid kit, water bottle, flashlight, trail food, sun protection, whistle (consider this to be a hike, and as Scouts, you should always Be Prepared!)… bonus if you add in your rain gear for unpredictable weather
- Pen: you need to have a way to sign the geocache logbook – this is a must
- Device charger: you will be using your device as a map, so it is a good idea to bring a battery pack of sorts
- Goodies to trade: as stated on the Geocaching website, it is a golden rule of geocaching - if you take something, leave behind something of equal or higher value. Some options we love:
· A vintage patch
· Dice
· Some sort of coin
· An emoji squishy
· Anything that fits – keep it small! - You can also carry an extra log just in case the logbook is full at the geocache #doagoodturn
Geocaching is an awesome activity that can be done either with your family or with your unit – definitely give it a try and tag us in you adventures on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter!
