5 October Camping Essentials: Must-Have Gear for Your Next Spooky Adventure

Gear Up to Go Camping with the Family This October

I can't wait for October—crisp weather, fall colors, pumpkin pies, and, most of all, Halloween! Whether camping or hiking, it's the perfect time of year for spooky outdoor adventures. If you're planning on camping this month, it's important to be prepared. To help you make the most of the fall weather before it gets too cold and all the colorful leaves are gone, here are some must-have gear essentials for your next October camping trip.

5 Gear Essentials for Your Next Spooky Adventure

First and foremost, you'll need a reliable tent. As the temperatures drop, you'll want to make sure your tent can keep you warm and dry. Look for a tent with a rainfly to keep out any rain, and consider a four-season tent for extra insulation. A good sleeping bag and sleeping pad are also essential for staying warm and comfortable throughout the night.

My October Must-Have: The MSR Elixir 3-Persont Tent

Highlights:

  • Fits a family of three comfortably
  • Color-coded poles for an easy setup
  • Lower price than anywhere else—including Amazon!

Next, you'll want to pack some warm clothing. Layers are key when camping in the fall, so bring plenty of long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and jackets. Don't forget a warm hat and gloves, as well as waterproof boots for any muddy or wet conditions.

My October Must-Have: LizardHead Baselayers

Highlights:

  • Helps regulate body temp by wicking away moisture from your skin
  • Provides an extra layer of insulation
  • Additional protection from the sun’s UV rays

If you're planning on cooking your own meals, a portable stove is a must-have. Look for a stove that's easy to set up and use, and don't forget to bring plenty of fuel. A set of camping cookware and utensils will also come in handy for preparing and serving your meals.

My October Must-Have: GSI Selkirk 460 Plus Camp Stove

Highlights:

  • Push-button ignition
  • Twin burners designed to heat large pots rapidly
  • Micro-control valves provide precise tunability and output for each burner, from slow simmering to fast boiling!

As it gets darker earlier in the fall, lighting becomes more important. Bring a headlamp or flashlight for navigating your campsite and for any late-night trips to the bathroom. Lanterns or string lights can also be a fun and festive addition to your campsite.

My October Must-Have: Nebo Galileo 1000 Lantern

Highlights:

  • A power bank that charges most USB devices
  • Rechargeable battery with USB cable included
  • 1000 lumens with dimming capabilities

When camping in the fall, it's important to be prepared in case of a cut or fall. A first aid kit is also a must-have for any injuries or emergencies.

My October Must-Have: The Adventure Medical Kit

Highlights:

  • The resealable DryFlex bag remains watertight after each use
  • Small enough to fit in the side pocket of your pack
  • The kit is filled with preparedness supplies for wounds, muscle aches, blisters, and other common outdoor injuries

Finally, don't forget some entertainment for those cozy evenings around the campfire. Bring a deck of cards or some board games, as well as a good book or two. And, of course, no campfire is complete without s'mores ingredients!

My October Must-Have: GSI Travel Axe Throwing Game

Highlights:

  • Packs down into a travel sack, making it easy to store or put in your backpack
  • Each foam axe is fitted with a gripper strip "blade" that sticks to the target
  • The suction cup and hanging loop make for easy mounting indoors and out
  • Lightweight and compact for easy portability
