Details

This pamphlet assists Scouts attempting to earn the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge, which is required to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout.

Scouts are often called upon to help because they know first aid and they know about the discipline and planning needed to react to an emergency situation. Earning this merit badge helps a Scout to be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during, and after an emergency.

Among other accomplishments, Scouts successfully earning this merit badge will be able to complete and/or discuss the following:
•Discuss the aspects of emergency preparedness by preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergency situations
•Mitigate and prevent emergency situations
•Identify the government or community agencies that normally handle and prepare for emergencies and explain how a group of Scouts could volunteer to help in the event of these types of emergencies
•Identify your communitys emergency management director, learn and share what this person does to prepare, respond to, recover from, and mitigate and prevent emergency situations in your community
•Take part in an emergency service project, either a real one or a practice drill, with a Scouting unit or a community agency
•Prepare and explain a written plan for mobilizing your troop when needed to perform emergency service
•Take part in at least one troop mobilization; then conduct an after-action? lesson, discussing what you learned during the exercise that required changes or adjustments to the plan
•Prepare a personal emergency service pack for a mobilization call and prepare a family emergency kit
•Use an approved checklist to inspect your home for potential hazards and explain how they can be corrected
•Review or develop a plan of escape for your family in case of fire in your home
•Develop an accident prevention program for five family activities outside the home
