By using this digital pamphlet to achieve the requirements of the Athletics Merit Badge, Scouts will learn the traits and importance of good sportsmanship, how to plan and conduct a sports meet or field day that includes 10 activities, how to serve as an official or volunteer at a sports meet to observe officials in action, first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while participating in athletic events, and the importance of warming up and cooling down. They will also be able to explain the importance of the physical exam, maintaining good health habits, and maintaining a healthy diet. Through earning this merit badge, they can also learn the most likely hazards encountered during athletic activities, and what to do to anticipate, help prevent, mitigate, and respond to these hazards. They will be able to explain what an amateur athlete is and the differences between an amateur and a professional athlete. Finally, the Athletics Merit Badge will help Scouts to establish a personal training program suited to a specific athletic activity and give the rules for two athletic activities.
